royal baby on the way. britain's duchess of cambridge is admitted to a london hospital in the early stages of labor. suspect under arrest. police are expected to charge an alleged serial killer for three murders in east cleveland, ohio. and major comeback. phil mickelson surges from five strokes back to win the british open. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, july 22nd, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, kate, the wife of britain's prince william, was admitted to a london hospital this morning in the early stages of labor. the baby would be third in line to the british throne.

alphonso van marsh is outside the hospital. alphonso, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. lots of excitement as you mentioned. crowds are building in this building behind me. we understand palace officials announced about an hour and a half ago that kate, the duchess of cambridge has been admitted to hospital. she's in the early stages of labor. we understand she arrived by car along with her husband prince william. as you said she'll be delivering the third in line to the throne. will it be a boy or a girl? at this point we don't know, but one of the first indications we'll get is when an aide comes out from behind me carrying a bullet bulletin. on that bulletin will be the sex, possibly the weight and the time the baby was born. that bulletin will be taken to town by car to buckingham palace and placed on an easel. that's how the world will find out along with social media. anne-marie? >> i bet that will spread like

wildfire. alfonzo van marsh. thank you, alphonso. well, in this country, police are investigating a possible serial killer case. over the weekend police in cleveland found the bodies of three people. erica ferrari reports. >> reporter: police have ended their search for more human remains in a cleveland suburb. they found nothing new sunday after looking through abandoned homes in the same cleveland neighborhood where investigators discovered three decomposing corpses wrapped in a plastic bag. they say this man, 35-year-old michael madison, a convicted sex offender is their suspect. neighbors are shocked. >> that could be my little daughter or a neighbor. >> reporter: police discovered the first body friday in a garage. the saturday cruise discovered a second in a backyard and a third body in a vacant home nearby. the medical examiner confirms all of the victims are women, and because their bodies are so badly decomposed, it could take some time to identify them. police say the women were likely killed six to ten days ago.

>> something like this is very up setting, not only for me, but for my family and grandchildren. >> reporter: east cleveland's mayor says madison told investigators a serial killer inspired him. in 2011 andrew sowell was charged with killing women. police say he's expected to be charged monday. erica ferrari, cbs news. there window a widespread flooding. on sunday torrential rain flooded streets and stranded dozens of motorists. a helicopter rescued two men whose suv was caught in the floodwaters. some homes were flooded. rainfall ranked from a half inch to two inches. there were no reported injuries, though. the heavy rain did lessen the threat of wildfires and with the help of heavy rain, firefighters have made significant progress, controlling a huge wildfire near palm springs, california. thousands of people who were

forced to evacuate were allowed to return on sunday. the fire burned 42 square miles. seven homes were destroyed. authorities say the fire was human caused but would not say whether it was accidental. and one week after the acquittal of former neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon martin, there were dozens of nationwide rallies over the weekend against the verdict. several hundred people marched through houston on sunday. they pressed for federal civil rights charges against zimmerman. they also called for changes to the nation's so-called "stand your ground" defense laws. on friday president obama talked about what he and other african-americans face. >> there are very for african-american men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. that includes me. >> also in houston on sunday there were demonstrations in support of zimmerman. both rallies were peaceful.

an estimated 278,000 current and retired employees in detroit may end up bearing the city's bankruptcy in detroit. detroit is about $19 billion in debt. it's the result of decades of struggles in the auto industry and changing demographics. detroit's mayor says unlike the auto industry, his city will not ask for a federal bailout, at least not yet. and defense secretary chuck hagel says most of the military's civilian work force will have their pay cut by 20% and some could be furloughed as the pentagon struggles with defense cuts. congress must stem the cuts starting october 1st. more than three quarters of a million civilians work for the military. hagel warns of even possibly deeper cuts. >> on the "cbs moneywatch" now, president obama hits the road, and gas prices accelerate. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley.

>> good morning to you, anne-marie. the japan's prime minister's election victory boosted asian stocks. tokyo's nikkei added half a percent while hong kong's hang seng rose a quarter percent. on wall street investors will keep a sharp eye on earnings. netflix, apple, and amazon will be just a few of the heavy hitters that will report their quarterly results this week. on friday microsoft and google sent stocks tumbling, but for the week the dow was in the black, up almost 80 points, while the nasdaq was down 12 points. president obama goes on the offensive this week. he's expecting big fights with republicans over raising the federal debt limit and the upcoming budget. he will travel around the country laying out his plan to strengthen the economy. his first stop will be in illinois on wednesday. jury selection begins today in the first civil lawsuit against toyota. in 2006 a 66-year-old california woman was killed when her camry

crashed. her family claims the accelerator pedal got stuck, and the camry hit speeds of up to 100 miles an hour. toyota denies that. they face more than 80 civil cases. well, more pain at the pump. according to aaa, the nation wide price for a gallon of gas is $3.67. that is up seven cents from just a week ago. last year at the same time a gallon cost $3.46. and at the position office a low budget frightfest scared off some big budget movies. "the conjuring," a haunted house thriller, debuted at number one with just over $41 million. it sent former box office champ "despicable me 2" in second place at $25 million, and "turbo," a story about a speedy snail came in at third place. no scary movies for me, thanks. >> me neither. i will not be contributed to

nut to crack, and i don't see it being easily managed at this time, given the politics of the situation on both sides. >> among the sticking points the palestinians are insisting on israel withdrawing settlers from disputed territories and re-establishing the borders that were in plains in 196 p. >> it will not happen. we are here to say. >> israel prime minister benjamin netanyahu has refused to negotiate with the 1967 borders as baseline for a palestinian state. secretary of state john kerry has kept his opinions to himself. >> private conversations are the very best way to preserve the time and the space for progress and understanding when you face difficult complicated issues such as middle east peace. >> john kerry is unlikely to let the talks fall apart without a fight. many here in washington say he's been singularly focused on tissue since becoming secretary of state.

a roller coaster in texas remains closed after a woman fell to her death on friday. the german company that made the ride is sending a team to find out just what happened. as manuel bojorquez tells us, some eyewitnesses still can't believe what they saw. >> reporter: investigators in arlington, texas, are still working to determine what caused the tragic death of rosie esparza at six flags in texas. it was esparza's first time visiting the amusement park. park visitors are still shaken by the incident. >> still very sad. i feel horrible for the family. >> reporter: the 51-year-old dallas mother was riding the texas giant roller coaster with her family. stunned eyewitnesses say she flew out of her seat moments after the ride began. this family saw it all and heard the reaction from esparza's children as the ride finished. >> they were screaming as they cam back, and they were screaming as they tried to get out of the restraint. they were screaming, my mom, my mom, we've got to get my mom, she's done.

>> reporter: before the ride began an attendant was asked to check her ride because she doesn't feel safe and she assured her she was. >> one of the employees from the park, the ladies, she asked them to check it more than once and they said, oh, as long as you heard it click, you're oklahoma. >> reporter: police and fire department officials say there's no evidence of foul play. this video shot by cbs news earlier this year shows how fast this coaster can go with a drop of 79 degrees and bank of 95 degrees. the texas giant climbs 14 stories high at its tallest point. the ride was closed for the 2010 season and the all wooden track was replaced with a new prefabricated system. it is now closed while the investigation continues. this is only the second death at this park since it opened in 1961, and since 2008 there have been reports of 14 minor injuries that occurred on the texas giant. to be clear, the ride behind me is not the texas giant. in a statement to cbs news

the here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york, afternoon thunderstorms. thunderstorms in miami and chicago as well with chicago, a high of 86. dallas, mostly sunny today. los angeles, partly sunny, 79 the high. and time now for a check of the national forecast. the summer thunderstorm season is in full swing across most of the country. parts of the midwest, south, and southwest could see severe storms with damaging winds and hail. a stalled front will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to the northeast, but it will be dry and hot in the northwest. in sports, phil mickelson called it the best round of his career. when the final round of the british open began, mickelson was five shots off the lead, but he played a masterful back nine. he birdied four of the six finally holes, shooting a 5 under 66, winning the tournament by three strokes.

overdoses from a family of dugs that includes oxycontin and illegal drugs like heroin, killed 20,000 americans in 2010 and that's more than homicides. now a city in massachusetts is fighting back with another drug. don dahler reports. >> reporter: quincy's police officer donovon has a new weapon in his cruiser. narcan. narcan reverses an overdose by blocking an opioid's ability to attach to brain cells. normal breathing can resume within minutes. >> we gave him narcan and it was -- >> reporter: he has used the nasal spray to reverse overdoses eight times. quincy is the first police department to require every officer to carry the drug. the human aspect is like, this is a life.

way. live pictures of outside the hospital. kate middleton was admitted in the early stages of labor. you can hear the chatter of people gathering outside. alfonso is in london where all eyes are on st. mary's hospital. >> reporter: crowds are building outside the london hospital where william's wife kate went into labor. an elaborate plan is in place to notify the public about the royal delivery. a driver will carry not a royal aid. following tradition, officials will post a signed bulletin in front of the palace. this will be the first royal birth to be posted on twitter and facebook. the first phone calls will go to the queen
